“Growing God’s Garden” at Holy Trinity

Mike Morketter for the Stewardship Team

Merriam-Webster defines ‘Stewardship’ in part as “the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one’s care”.  The Bible is more specific, acknowledging that all of Creation, everything in us and around us, is God’s and that as stewards we have an obligation to nurture, share and grow the gifts we’ve been given, all to more perfectly glorify God.

As the theme for this year’s Stewardship effort, the phrase “Growing God’s Garden” speaks to our obligation as God’s stewards, not only to plant and nurture, but to GROW.  It’s no secret that Holy Trinity’s average Sunday attendance has grown over the past three years from approximately 170 to around 235.  The energy and enthusiasm on Sunday mornings here is amazing.  The challenge is to harness that energy in our individual lives and be changed by it; to grow from one who simply ‘comes in to worship’ into one who also ‘goes out to serve’.  Individually the gifts and talents of this congregation are boundless so let’s use them! Plant them here and share yourself with others.  Find a ministry to grow into and help others do the same.  You’ll find that Sundays mornings will be even more rewarding.

There are financial realities associated with growth too.  For our current fiscal year which began January 1, we have 140 individuals and families that have made a pledged financial commitment to God, to Holy Trinity and to you.   That number of pledges is up by only 3 from last year.  Pledged gifts will total almost $460,000 this year and make up approximately 83% of our $556,000 budget.   Pledged income funds our building and grounds expenses, our priests’ and staff compensation, our spiritual and parish life programs, our commitment to the Diocese of East Carolina, our music and youth ministries; in short, virtually everything that happens here grows out of the financial seeds and soil of those 140 gifts back to God.  It’s no surprise that our financial needs increase with our numbers. The hope is that we all hear God’s call to grow into generosity.  If Holy Trinity is where you are closest to God, rejoice in that and do what you can financially to nurture our common life.

The Stewardship committee’s mission this year is to challenge each of us to deliberately live more generously with our time and our money in giving back to God.  Through a mix of Sunday speakers, written reflections in the bulletin and newsletters, by liturgies that point to a duty of Stewardship and generosity; by educational programs like Planned Giving and by parish-wide celebrations like Holy Smokes and the Oyster Roast, the stewardship committee wants to encourage each of us to roll up our sleeves and turn some soil; to till and plant and nurture in Growing God’s Garden here at Holy Trinity.

Requesting Mayfair 2018 Funds for Outreach:  For those who may be newer to our community, or for those who may not know, Mayfair which was held Saturday, May 5 this year was a HUGE event.  Mayfair is a yard sale organized by Holy Trinity parishioners, made possible by donations from parishioners and others in the community and the tireless work of those who sort, price, organize, clean, pick up and donate goods.  All money raised through Mayfair is granted to established Outreach programs within Holy Trinity and in the greater Fayetteville Community.  These funds are entrusted to individuals and groups who have experience, knowledge, and skills to help those in need in our community.  Most of the organizations/ministries that have requested funds in the past have active participants who are also Holy Trinity parishioners.

Please follow the following steps if you wish to submit a request for Mayfair funds for your organization.   From our website,, choose the Outreach Tab.  From the drop-down menu, choose “Make a Request”. Then select “Receive Funds for My Organization”.  Grant requests for Mayfair Funds are due by August 1st.

New Prayer Requests in June: While Janice is on vacation in June, please send all prayer requests to Alice and Richard Bull. .  All new prayer additions to the prayer list will be on a sheet in the narthex.

Altar Flowers: Each week, members of the Altar Guild Flower committee arrange flowers to beautify our sanctuary and help make our worship space special.  These flowers remain in place throughout the week.  Parishioners can sponsor a week for a cost of $40 and it is noted in the bulletin.  Flowers are given “to the glory of God”, but you can indicate if they are given in memory, honor or celebration of someone.  Please put your check payable to Holy Trinity with “Altar Flowers” in the memo in the offering plate or mail to the church office.  Your support of this creative ministry is greatly appreciated!
